Inspired by adventurer Jack Black's 1920 autobiography "You Can't Win," our project, of the same title, explores topics of crime, criminal justice, vice, addictions, penology, and human folly from various viewpoints, from observer to consumer to supplier, and from victim to perpetrator, all from the vantage point of a simple historical object—dice. We will make loaded dice that always roll ones. This involves visiting a major dice manufacturer in Taiwan and working with them to create a mold for the loaded dice. We would then bring this mold back to Workshop and produce an edition of dice, a printed addendum and the packaging that contains them. The images attached are examples of artist-made objects we have produced in the past. (Please open .gif's in browser to view animations.) The industry of gaming is founded on a basic truth—the house wins at all costs. Beating the house requires that the player thinks and executes in a moral grey area—such as counting cards.
