Western Black Rhino Trophy Lamp
Default Title -
My project is inspired by the western black rhinoceros. This sub-species of the black rhino has been declared extinct. I propose to make an edition of Western Black Rhinoceros Trophy Head Lamps. The final product will be a porcelain rhinoceros head with 2 horn shaped lightbulbs, mounted to the wall. The head will be realistically sculpted out of clay in order to make a slip cast mold for porcelain casting. The porcelain heads will then be glazed in a series of solid colors. The horns of the rhino will be replaced by 2 light sockets and horn shaped light bulbs. Each lamp will be wired so that both light sockets will function off the same plug. The lamp will have a 12 x 12 inch wall footprint, and protrude from the wall about 14 inches. The Black Rhino Trophy Lamp will serve as a light fixture and wall sculpture.
Included is an image of a rough clay sketch for this project.
The trophy lamp is intended to commemorate the western black rhino. Over 90% of the black rhino population has been wiped out in the last 30 years due to poaching. Their horns are desired by many, for a variety of reasons and medicines. In this reincarnation of the trophy head, no animals will be harmed and the mounted head will provide light instead of darkness.
