Wallpapering (Paper Pulp Tiles)
Default Title -
We have recently been developing products by pulping and molding recycled paper into forms. Our source for this material has been the pattern offcuts from the garment factory neighboring our studio, but virtually any paper source could be applied towards this process. To date, we have successfully developed prototypes of lights and wall tiles and are interested in applying it towards components of furniture as well.
Our hexagonal molded tiles, however, have elicited a the most positive response, recently being featured on Design Milk online magazine and resulting in several inquiries from architectural firms interested in implementing them as decorative elements and particularly as sound buffers.
We feel that the time is right to explore how the production process could be scaled up in order to meet such interests. Our current process follows that of ceramic tile production, with a single Hydrostone air-release die and a fairly long drying time. If the production were automated and not as labor-intensive, it could result in an affordable, sustainable product with versatile use as a functional interior architectural element.
Our hope through this residency is to find ways to speed up the production process, lower the price point of this product and make it a realistic and competitive substrate for interior spaces. We are also interested in applying this residency time towards exploring how it could be strengthened through combining it with other materials, making it fire-resistant, and possibly applying it towards furniture design.
