I have been fixated on lace-making for many years now.
Last year I took a workshop on the technique of Russian bobbin lace. I have been practicing this technique for the last year.
I propose to produce a series of images based on an anatomically correct heart, through the technique of lacemaking. I would start off from some basic drawings, and would then move into freeform lace, creating images based loosely on the idea of an anatomical heart. The intention would be to start off with an image that is faithful to a representation of a heart and progressively move into an abstract image.
These lace pieces could be sewn onto any number of textile products.
The following paragraphs are short explanations of the various facets of my work.
My art practice is predicated on ideas rather than a specific medium, or traditional artistic disciplines. The guiding direction in my work isn't aesthetic, but is conceptual. Simply put, I archive the passage of time through several mediums.
This is evident in all of my pieces. I am currently working on a body of work that will take form over a long period of time. Some pieces are planned out over a period of two years, others five years, some are infinite and others are developed according to the time parameters set at the start of the project.
With my textile pieces, I work in repetition. Remaking, re-imagining the same images. In one series of crocheted works, I made 16 different free-crocheted anatomical hearts. With another series, I created a series of seven large poufs in various shapes and sizes, none of them the same shape, and all hand sewn.
Our lives are replete with moments of banality and repetition, far more than significant, catalyzing moments and extraordinary catharthis. For some time now, I have become fascinated with the daily banal. This led me to collect and accumulate : pieces of paper, various wrapping and packaging materials, grocery lists, receipts and fragments of conversations that mark the rhythm of my days. I am currently working on a artist book that would gather all these objects together as embossings. The book is scheduled to be finalized for the end of August 2014.
My drawing work is based on family photos from the 1950's. I choose elements from these photos, and reproduce them using watercolor inks, watercolor crayons, graphite pencil and acrylic ink. The same people are represented in most of my pieces. This repetition of individual portraits, of which there are several people that I do not know and have never met, despite their contribution to several family anecdotes and their direct family links, I find strangely paradoxical. These people are at once both very close and very far from my personal history.
And when all our moments are accumulated in one place, will they finally become palpable? Will I be able to seize them with my hands? To touch them? And by accumulating these gestures, will life become more tangible, and more concrete?

The goal was to construct as many hearts as possible, using the technique of free crochet and basing the design loosly on images of hearts.
