Bringing fine art objects into everyday use is what attracts me to this project. The opportunity for great design is often overlooked in the home. Through the Workshop Residence, I would like to design and create a series of handmade towel rings. The rings will be built out of clay, and they will be fired and glazed by traditional means. I will create a series of one-of-a-kind pieces that can be displayed as an installation, but can also be reproduced by slip cast. Each piece will be able to fit into an eight by eight inch square. The images that I am submitting are prototypes that I have been designing to work out functionality. I am interested in using local plants to impress into the ceramic pieces as a decorative element that brings a natural element indoors. I am particularly fascinated with the plants and wildlife local to California, as the foliage is completely foreign to me as an East Coast native. I am excited about designing a screen-printed tea towel with a selection of the Bay Area’s flora as an accompaniment.
