The Expandable Book Support
Default Title -
The Expandable Book Support is a home fixture that accommodates books. There is a fluidity to the function of the individual elements that comprise this fixture. Through their ability to expand, they transform the space the books occupy, alleviating clutter, crowdedness, and disorder; they create space. These elements include a parallel bar form that supports the books along their spine and base. The modular sliding bookends buttress books on opposite sides preventing them from toppling over. All three modular units have dovetail shaped tracks which allow for a sliding action, but also serve as the negative space for wall mounted cleats. As a book collection expands, the modular bookends can slide laterally, but also affix to the wall and be used as shelving.
There is an adaptability to the bookends as well as the parallel bar sculpture. I have been exploring the versatility of function in my graduate research. I challenge the notion of utility through abstracting functional elements to create expressive sculptures. While the book is typically housed within a piece of furniture specifically designed for its storage, in this work, the book interacts with an expressive form, the parallel bar. The resulting marriage of the book with the expressive form redefines the meaning and function of the sculpture, an artwork included within my larger body of work. The sculpture through its design and purpose now embodies expressive qualities while also performing a utilitarian task.
Initially designed with the intention of housing books,The Expandable Book Support is truly intended to instigate opportunities for creating spaces; it is meant to give the owner a sense of agency and the ability to exercise control over the objects that comprise they’re environment. Altering the configuration of the elements that make up The Expandable Book Support provides the owner with the unique possibility to transform their surroundings as they see fit.
The parallel bar sculpture is constructed of welded 1/2” steel round bar, and has a powder coat finish. The modular bookends are all unique in size and shape and are assembled with 3/4” oak plywood and wood glue. They are constructed with a combination of mitre and dado butte joints; these joints in combination with the glue do not necessitate the use of metal fasteners. The machines required to construct The Expandable Book Support include a table saw, chop saw, Tig or Mig welder, angle grinder, metal files, and a horizontal band saw. The attached images are examples of the proposed project and how it functions. Also, listed below are the dimensions of the individual units that comprise the entire project.
