This project came about last year when I was thinking of something to make for my 3 year old daughter. I wanted to make something simple, inexpensive, activity oriented, and something that could be sued for years to come. I was staring out in the backyard, spacing out, and watching a large tree sway in the breeze.
The swing has two literal components (piece of wood and a length of rope) and one implied component (a tree).
The wood is ideally recycled and has a story that comes along with it. One hole is drilled in each side, large enough for the rope to fit through.
The rope should be soft to the hands, not too stretchy, and strong. Having grown up myself on a sailboat, I headed down to the local marine store and chatted up the people there. They helped me choose something from probably a hundred options.
A tree must be selected. It should be strong, and have a good vibe. One end of the rope needs to go up over the branch, then each end of is fitted through the hole and knotted on the underside. It can be raised as needed by simply adding another knot to the rope.

Since I have installed a swing in the backyard, it has activated the space. My daughter goes out and plays with her friends. I have had barbecues on Sundays and parties in the evenings where groups of adults and kids swing and laughed and had smiles on their faces. I have stressful days and can take a break, go swing for a minute, and then feel better afterwards. Possibly it is a muscle memory from childhood, I don't really know. But it feels good.
