scaleable family of indeterminate objects
Default Title -
The project seeks to use the advantages of digital technologies such as CNC fabrication and 3D printing to create a family of forms which operate at the scale of the hand, body and many bodies using varied methods and moving between traditional and digital tools. On the scale of multiple bodies, a piece of indeterminate outdoor furniture is proposed, using a CNC router to carve a positive form out of foam to be used as 1:1 model and press mold for fiberglass layup process. Once complete, the surface will be covered in moss and coaxed into growing using a moss slurry mixture. Is it a chair, a stool, a lounger—yes! At the scale of the body, a multifunction lamp is proposed, made of silicone or rubber, capable of being hung from the ceiling as a pendant, on the wall as a sconce or placed on the floor, utilizing CNC fabrication techniques to create a negative mold for casting. Lastly, a small container, perhaps a soap dish, is proposed and CNC routed out of a fragrant exotic wood, such as rosewood or teak and hand finished to create a smooth undulating surface to set a bar of soap upon.
I have included a diagram of the multiplicity of scales that this family of objects could work, as well as a composite image of the moss surface proposal and samples of work that I have designed and built, from large scale to small scale and made of a number of materials. Surface test is a model of the undulating surface which will become the moss surface and has informed scalar thinking for this project.
