I propose to create ceramic sculptures made from casting produce collected from different local neighborhood markets and grocery stores in San Francisco. I will be selecting produce that are specific to those neighborhoods – cactus leaves from the Mission District, bitter melon from Chinatown, etc. These ceramic pieces will then be assembled into curtains, hanging lamps, and other home accessories.
These pieces are made by creating plaster molds directly off the produce and then using casting slip to reproduce them in clay. The pieces, glazed in different bright colors, can then be assembled into curtains and lamps, using simple fasteners like zip ties, twine, etc. I would like for these pieces to be reminders of the neighborhood markets and people that bring them to the Bay Area, as well as to function as fun home accessories.
The title of this project, Produce, is a play on the category of fruits and vegetables that is the inspiration for the forms, as well as the slip casting to make multiples process. The images I have included show my current ceramic work. My interest is in exploring design to combine these art objects into functional home pieces.
