Living Works Of Art
Default Title -
My name is Lynn Steeves, mother of two, wife of one & a lover of craft, diy! I have always felt I had a very creative side, but not until my 40’s did I fully embrace & accept this side of me. I feel most creative in my office/workshop off of my bedroom, it is my most favorite place to be. There, you will find stacks and stacks of frames I have painstakingly scavenged from everywhere. No place is off limits; garage sales, flea markets, antique stores, corporate chain stores and friends houses. You will find, rolls of wire, boxes of moss, crates of dirt and succulents everywhere. It gives this workspace a smell of earth, water & paint. There are wire cutters, paintbrushes, shears and many other tools I cannot live without. Among them, my iphone. You are probably wondering by now what I create in this space. Living works of art. I am compelled to create them and have created over 400 since I started in 2012. I sell them at Farmers’ markets, local stores & from my Etsy shop. Etsy has been such a great outlet for someone like me and so many others.
I start with a frame, Sometimes I paint them, other times they are perfect as is. I pull all of it apart and polyurethane to create a waterproof barrier. Once dried, put back together. Measure the correct size of wire and attach a wire to the front of the frame to create at least 2” of root space. Now the real fun begins. I fill with soil by gently pushing through the mesh wire. grab a big handful of wet moss and carefully choose which plants I will be working with. I find once I start with one, it starts to create itself. By carefully placing and using moss to anchor them, I position the succulents as I go until I am satisfied with the design. After each one, that one usually is my most favorite until I am on to the next.
The best part is the look on someones face when they see one of my creations and appreciate the natural beauty of the plants.
Now that you know my story I propose the use of many local businesses to construct and supply in a great local group effort in creating these eco-friendly, affordable art pieces that can be enjoyed by many. Local nurseries, garden suppliers & builders to name a few, could be recruited to create many pieces from the very small to creative, unique ways to construct vertical gardens on a larger scale.
