The proposal for DRINK is an evolution from two ongoing projects- TABLE LESSONS and FLUIDS. In these projects responses from participants culminated in interactive events whereby the works made; tableware, cups and glasses were used in social events. These two projects explored the cultural and personal relationships everyone has with the food and drinks they consume. DRINK differs from those because most of the ceramic and glassware in TABLE LESSONS and FLUIDS was commercially produced. In this new proposal the 3-5 cups will be designed and produced for a specific type of drink and to facilitate the social interaction the drinks may generate.
The urge to engage with others socially is probably one of man’s most basic needs. Having a sense of belonging to a community and a forum to meet others and find common ground leads to longevity, vitality and a strong sense of belonging. Of course for many people sharing a drink is an additional component of this shared, congenial experience. The choice of drink for example has a way of becoming an important symbol of ones identity and place within a community. It is a lubricant to promote connection and belonging. The particular glass containing the drink, on the other hand, is something that can go unnoticed. Sometimes it serves as a means of advertising a particular brand of beverage. In my creative work however, I think of functional objects as being dependent on time and situation. The cups are an important participant in a shared drink amongst friends, family, colleagues or strangers.
DRINK is part collaborative research with community, part design problem solving all culminating in a small group (3-5) of unique ceramic cups designed to relate to the type of beverage and the kind of social engagement one might have while using that cup. Research gathering in the form of surveys distributed to participants asking questions about their personal habits and rules of beverage consumption will first be gathered from a variety of constituents. Once the research has been gathered, writings about various drinks will be selected and ceramic cups will be designed to connect the beverage to the text. Aspects of survey results will be affixed on the ceramic ware, graphically joining the cups with text and possibly image. I will design and fabricate the cup positives, have them slip cast and fired. After the glaze firing each cup will have a screen print decal with text added (possibly by myself). As a skilled ceramicist I would of course bring my expertise to all steps of this process.
