Collectibles from Clay
Default Title -
I would like to transform a series of large scale ceramic sculptures into collectible, 3-D printed miniatures. Each sculpture has a graphic quality which will lend well to its digital translation. From there, the scale will be brought down to the handheld and printed using the latest 3-D technologies. I would like to work alongside Machinic (also located in the Dogpatch) or possibly CCA to troubleshoot the best ways to render these sculptures as 3-D printer files.
The intended function is to turn a body of work into a series of multiples and to bring clay into the conversation of art and technology. The transformation from mud form to computer file to plastic rendering is one that I am excited about. This also allows work that is originally heavy, fragile, and expensive to have a new life as lightweight, durable, and economical. I love clay, but it's sluggish. 3-D printing provides an opportunity for increased agility of these forms.
The sculptures themselves are rich in color and imagination. They're strange and typically evade any concrete descriptions. They have the ability to be multiple things at once and live within their own world with slippery references to our own. The function of the 3-D printed products falls somewhere between toy and collectible. Ideally each work is sold in its own custom box with its own story, or possibly all sold together as one collection in one box. Ideally I would like to make ten different printed forms in editions of 25 each (250 total, all hand-held). This approach also allows sculpture to have similar qualities to printmaking, as the resulting products are literally "prints" of the original sculpture.
