I crafted a prosthetic holder to address the fact that breast prosthetics hold their shape only if they rest in a molded box while the user sleeps. The styrene, vacuum formed, rounded edge box included with each prosthetic breast is housed in an aesthetically unappealing baby blue polyester, zipper-closed box. In response to this design oversight I crafted a box by CNC milling the geometrically perfect breast shape out of hardwood.
The box itself is a beautiful sculptural piece. I milled two prototypes, one out of maple, the other of walnut using a 5-Axis mill. Workshop could sell the bowl, which I have dubbed Bowl X, to those who are in need of their own prosthetic holder, and to those interested in wooden forms used as functional receptacles. The box itself is a sculpted manifestation of the breast cancer experience, rectilinear and rigid on the outside, and soft and feminine in the inside.
The attached photos show the two prototypes of Bowl X, each milled from a 7"L x 7"W x 3.5"H block of stacked maple, and walnut. One is finished with clearcoat, and the other with an coconut oil and beeswax polish.
