A Delightful New Treatment for Nearly Any Planar Surface
Default Title -
I would like to develop a series of decorative ceramic tiles featuring an abstract geometric pattern executed in deep relief. All visual complexity would come from the surface texture and contours of the tiles, which would be finished with a monochrome glaze. I've submitted some images that show earlier tile sets and exploration of surface modeling (primarily process pieces that I used to develop a technique, rather than to produce a finished object). Although most of these feature either organic forms or rough geological surfaces, for this project I'm envisioning smoother, more angular shapes that combine to form a network of interlinking planes.
Tiles would be sized to match standard 3" x 6" wall tile, making it possible to use them to create an accent area or an entire complex surface. Slip-casting molds of the tiles created during the Workshop Residency would be made and used for mass-production.
I'm envisioning a straightforward, manageable project with an attractive end product that, due to its modularity, can be personalized by its users and installed in a wide variety of scenarios.
If time permits, the tile design could be extended to other housewares (I'm partial to candle holders, personally).
